SFSC Taps Degree Works to Advise Students
At the end of February, South Florida State College (SFSC) will implement Degree Works, a comprehensive academic advising, transfer articulation, and degree audit solution that helps students and their advisors successfully negotiate SFSC’s curriculum requirements.
The degree audit is a tool for academic planning and course selection, it provides the student and advisor with an analysis of degree requirements for a particular degree, major, minor, or concentration.
Degree Works enhances advising by providing accurate and comprehensive information that can be used 24/7 in consultation with an advisor to make academic decisions.
Degree Works will be accessible for students through their Panther Central account. Counselors, advisors, and other staff responsible for Degree Works maintenance will be able to login into the server at http://redeye.southflorida.edu:81.
Degree Works is not intended to replace the one-on-one sessions with academic advisors. The program helps advisors by minimizing errors through clear and consistent degree plans, reducing paperwork and manual program check sheets, and allows advisors to search for students by degree and/or certificate to view progress.
When using Degree Works, students are able to learn the degree requirements for their major, see how all completed courses apply to degree/certificate requirements, identify courses needed to complete their degree/certificate, view their grades and academic standing, view their cumulative grade-point-average (GPA), plan for registration in future semesters, and estimate how many semesters it will take to graduate. Most importantly, students are able to access their academic information at their convenience.
If a student believes their academic information is incorrect or missing, they are able to contact an advisor to review their record and enter any substitutions in their electronic degree audit as appropriate.
With direct access to Web-based worksheets and related hyperlinked information such as catalog information, class schedules, transcripts, help desk services, and FAQs, SFSC students will spend less time deciphering degree requirements and more time pursuing academic goals.
“Degree Works is perhaps the most significant integration to Banner since the college implemented Banner,” said Dr. Christopher Van Der Kaay, SFSC chief information officer. “It’s a tool that is relevant to student success and allows students to monitor their progress and be proactive.”
In addition, Degree Works captures vital information, providing SFSC with important metrics for planning future term course offerings, streamlining processes for more efficient cost management, keeping pace with higher education standards, and improved retention and graduation rates.
“The college is committed to a level of excellence,” said Felecia Dozier, chair of advising and counseling. “Degree Works gives the students ownership of their academic track. The implementation of this system will help fulfill the goals of student success and excellent academic advisement while allowing the advisors and counselors to work collectively on these goals.”
