Remembering Sept. 11

On Patriot Day, Sept. 11, South Florida State College (SFSC) students, employees, and community members observed a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. at SFSC on the Highlands Campus. This marks the time that the first plane flew into the World Trade Center. Patriot Day honors those who fell during the 9/11 terrorist attack and pays homage to all first responders.

The commemoration was intended to ensure that the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001, are never forgotten and to show appreciation for firefighters, law enforcement officers, medical support personnel, parole officers, veterans, counselors, and emergency medical technicians.

Ben Carter, adult education special projects coordinator, reflected on the 12th anniversary of the attacks. Members of the Young Republicans, a student organization, passed out “911 Never Forget” buttons. Julie Swift, retired air force veteran and SFSC student, brought and displayed a unique September 11th American flag given to her by her mother.
