Convocation Week Kicks Off Fall 2013

South Florida State College gears up for the 2013-2014 academic year with its annual Convocation week starting at 8:30 a.m., Monday, Aug. 19, in the SFSC University Center Auditorium. Dr. Thomas Leitzel, SFSC president, will make a brief presentation and recognize employees for their years of service.

Prior to the opening of Convocation, coffee, snacks, and juice will be provided by the SFSC Chapter of the Association of Florida Colleges (AFC). A potluck luncheon in the cafeteria will follow the Convocation at 11:30 a.m. Don’t forget to bring a dish of your favorite family recipe. The schedule below provides some of the times and places of Convocation events.

New Employees Join SFSC

SFSC welcomes all new employees, including the following:

Todd Bobo has joined SFSC as the fitness center trainer. Prior to joining SFSC, he was the director of rehab at Royal Care of Avon Park. He received his bachelor of science degree in health science from Liberty University in Lynchburg, and is working on his master of sports science at the United States Sports Academy. Bobo is a licensed athletic trainer with the State of Florida Department of Health.

Johanna Johnston will be the program specialist, agriculture programs, with the Shepard’s Field project. The Shepard’s Field project is a partnership between South Florida State College and Ave Maria Preparatory School. Prior to joining SFSC, she was an advertising account executive with Highlands Today. She holds a bachelor of science degree in business administration from California State University at Monterey Bay.

Dr. John Landry joined SFSC as director, criminal justice programs. Previously, he was an adjunct graduate instructor in the criminal justice department at South University and Florida Atlantic University. He received his bachelor’s degree in liberal sciences from Barry University, a master of science degree in criminal justice administration from Lynn University, and a doctorate in criminal justice from Capella University.

Michelle Macbeth  transfers into a full-time Spanish instructor at SFSC. She was recently an adjunct instructor at SFSC. She holds a bachelor of arts degree in English and a master of arts degree in comparative literature from Florida Atlantic University.

Claire Miller comes to SFSC as a librarian. Prior to SFSC, she was a visiting instructional librarian at the University of South Florida. She holds a bachelor of science degree from the New College of Florida and a master of arts degree in library and information science from the University of South Florida.

Dr. Monica Powers has joined SFSC as a director of Student Support Services/TRiO. Prior to joining SFSC, she was the director of student support services and TRiO at the University of Mary in Bismarck, N.D. She received her bachelor of science degree in elementary education and psychology and master of arts degree in education from Eastern New Mexico University, and a doctorate in educational leadership and higher education from the University of Nebraska.

Dr. Sonji Nicholas joins SFSC as an instructor in sociology. She was recently an adjunct sociology instructor at Florida Gulf Coast University and Edison State College. She holds a bachelor of arts degree in business administration from Howard University, a master of arts degree in African American Studies from the State University of Albany New York, and a doctorate in philosophy from the City University of New York.
