South Florida Community College student athletes continue to set records for their work inside the classroom. Panther softball player Morgan Huhn and baseball players Jared Hine and Sam Morgan have been named Academic All-Americans by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). In addition, 16 additional student athletes were recognized with all-conference or all-state academic honors.

“We are especially proud of our student athletes who achieved academic honors in our conference, in Florida, and as All-Americans, said Dr. Norm Stephens, president, SFCC.  “Not only do our student-athletes make excellent grades, but they graduate on time, and they are involved in campus student life as well as many community service projects.”

Three different distinctions are awarded to these student athletes based on their cumulative grade point averages. The highest distinction, the Pinnacle Award for Academic Excellence, is for students with a 4.0 GPA or higher.  The second distinction, the Award for Superior Academic Excellence, is for student athletes with a 3.8 – 4.0 GPA. The third distinction, the Exemplary Award for Academic Achievement, is for student athletes with a 3.6 – 3.8 GPA.  The NJCAA Academic All-Americans also must be of sophomore standing.

Huhn, an outfielder from North Palm Beach, received the Pinnacle Award for Academic Excellence, the NJCAA’s top scholastic honor, after finishing the 2011-12 academic year with a 4.14 grade point average (GPA). She plans to continue her education at the University of Tampa.

SFCC Sophomore Sam Morgan, an infielder from Valrico, also received NJCAA’s Pinnacle Award for Academic Excellence and was the FCSAA Bill Tuten Award Recipient.  The Bill Tuten Award is presented to the top student athlete for baseball in Florida.   Morgan completed his second year at SFCC with a 4.0 grade point average and will continue his academic and athletic career at North Carolina State as an infielder.

Hine, a sophomore pitcher from Valrico, closed out the school year with a 3.69 GPA. He received NJCAA’s award for Exemplary Academic Achievement. He plans to further his education at the University of South Florida.

“This is a tremendous honor for these athletes; they are an outstanding representative of the phrase student athlete,” Hitt said. “To be selected from all the outstanding candidates in Florida, this award is truly a credit to their dedication in academics and athletics at SFCC.”
