Dr. van der Kaay’s study to be published
An article written by Dr. Christopher van der Kaay, director, Adult Education, with the assistance of Dr. William Young, professor, Adult/Higher Education, University of South Florida (USF), has been accepted for publication in Community College Journal of Research and Practice and is tentatively scheduled to appear in the July 2010 edition.
“Age-Related Differences in Technology Usage Among Community College Faculty” evolved from the doctoral dissertation Dr. van der Kaay completed at USF. His quantitative/comparative study of faculty at five institutions examined a topic that had previously attracted little research: how older faculty perceived emerging technologies and whether barriers prevented them from incorporating new technology in their classrooms.
“The purpose was to find out how we can best serve older faculty, which are a growing segment in our community colleges,” Dr. van der Kaay said. His findings were surprising. “Some of the differences we found were less striking than the limited research suggested. Older faculty were using technology as much as their younger counterparts.”
