New Faculty Join SFCC

South Florida Community College welcomes new faculty members for the 2011-12 academic year. Two new biology instructors will join the science department this fall. Dr. James Hawker earned his doctorate in veterinary anatomy from Texas A & M University and has taught biology and chemistry at Florida State University, Tallahassee Community College, Southwest Georgia Technical College, and Hillsborough Community College. He also served as the visiting instructor and research faculty at the University of South Florida Moffitt Cancer Center and co-authored 24 refereed original journal articles and three chapters in scientific textbooks.

Ellen Cover earned her Ph.D. in zoology from Oklahoma State University. She has served as an academic dean and taught biology at East West College of Natural Medicine in Sarasota, Fla., Lamar University in Texas, Manatee Community College, and Florida Keys Community College. She has been published in a variety of journals and publications and received a National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) award for teaching excellence.

David Zoerb will teach developmental mathematics.  He earned his master’s degree in mathematics from Eastern Illinois University and has been a high school mathematics instructor. In 2009, Zoerb was a presenter at the 53rd Annual Conference of the Teaching of Mathematics at Eastern Illinois University where he spoke on how to incorporate mathematics with technology in the classroom.
