Two South Florida Community College instructors received Endowed Teaching Chair awards when the SFCC Foundation, Inc. held its 27th Annual Spring Gala on April 24 at the Hotel Jacaranda in Avon Park.

Mathematics instructor Lori Shumard received the Carol Emery Endowed Teaching Chair Award in Mathematics, and Bobby Sconyers, professor, Dental Assisting, received the Highlands County Health Facilities Authority Endowed Teaching Chair Award in Dental Education. The endowments will help provide training for new tools and technology they plan to incorporate into their classes.

Shumard will use her endowment to attend the Sloan C international conference in November, where she will learn new ways to use technology in her online and face-to-face math classes. She will then incorporate these new tools into her classes and use a Likert Scale survey at the end of the class, asking her students to rate each method. “My goal is to increase the use technology in my classes and learn about any new technology I may not yet be aware of,” she said. “The student survey will then help me determine how effective the technology was for them.”

Sconyers will use his endowment for training in dental clinical photography. “Almost every dental clinic uses photography to track patient progress,” he said. “It can also be used to show a patient what their future dental work results will look like by using photo manipulation programs like Photoshop.” Sconyers will learn how to take intra- and extra- oral digital photographs and develop creative and engaging lesson plans that can be used in both the assisting and hygiene classes.

Each year, the SFCC Foundation, Inc. conducts its annual meeting during the banquet and raises money for student scholarships. Highlights of this year’s gala included a Kentucky Derby theme for which attendees were invited to wear their finest hats to celebrate. There was also a live and silent auction which included a vacation to New York City, an iPAD2, and a Trek road bike.
