SFCC Hosts Retirement Reception for Effie Keen
SFCC employees are invited to a retirement reception for Effie Keen, director, DeSoto Campus, on Thursday, Dec. 2, 3-5 p.m., at the campus.
A fifth-generation DeSoto County resident, DeSoto High School graduate, and former home economics teacher, Keen joined SFCC’s administrative staff as coordinator of the DeSoto Campus in 1986, when it was located in a storefront office with three classrooms on U.S. Highway 17. During her 24 years of service to the college, she presided over the growth of the campus as it moved into its own facilities at 2261 N.E. Turner Avenue in Arcadia. Under Keen’s direction, the DeSoto Campus offers full range of associate degree and technical courses to approximately 700 students each year and provides community and workforce seminars and meeting space. “The students are the only reason we exist,” she said. “It’s rewarding and enjoyable to see the progress and growth they make.”
Keen is also widely known for her volunteer service to numerous local organizations, including the DeSoto Chamber of Commerce, the Arcadia Housing Authority, the DeSoto County Historical Society, and the DeSoto County Arts and Humanities Council.
For information about the reception, call SFCC’s Community Relations and Marketing Department at ext. 7250.
