Rita Rodriguez Receives Farmworker Star Award
Rita Rodriguez, case manager, adult migrant program, recently received the 2010 Farmworker Star award from the National Farmworker Jobs and Education Program. The award was given to former farmworkers who now work for farmworker programs. The Florida Farmworkers Jobs and Education program strengthens the ability of eligible migrant and seasonal farmworkers and their dependents to achieve economic self-sufficiency through their participation in educational, skills training and supportive services. Program participants, after completing their educational and skills training goals, are then able to obtain full-time, year-round unsubsidized employment. Rodriguez was a participant in the program at SFCC in 1997.
“The farmworker program helped me earn a vocational certificate in the general secretarial program,” Rodriguez said. “When the opportunity arose for me to work for the program I knew it would be a good fit. I know what farmworkers go through, and I wanted to help them. It’s very rewarding.”
“Rita is passionate and understanding about the farmworker program,” said Courtney Green, coordinator, tech prep and vocational dual enrollment. “She knows what the barriers for migrant workers are and how to help them overcome those barriers and get a good education.”
