Thinking of getting fit?  Then head to the Panther Fitness Center to pump some iron and meet the new personal fitness trainer, Andy Polk.  South Florida Community College staff and students may know Polk through his assistant baseball coaching position. But for those who don’t,  here’s an inside look.

Polk brings a wealth of personal training knowledge and skills to SFCC through his personal and professional experiences.  He graduated from Lake Wales High School in 2003 and played baseball for SFCC for two years.  After playing for SFCC, he went on to play for Florida Southern College and Webber International University each for one year.  He graduated from Webber International University and pitched for two years in an independent professional baseball league.  Polk has his personal training certification from the National Strength and Conditioning Association.  He has worked for a little over a year as a certified personal trainer at Anytime Fitness in Avon Park.

Polk will offer personal training advice and programs in areas, such as weight loss, increased strength training, and flexibility.  When asked what his main goal as the new Panther Fitness Center trainer would be, he said, “Being a resource for people who have questions and need advice with any type of personal training.” Polk will be on-site in the fitness center during the hours of operation to help people with the equipment, answer any questions, provide personal training advice and programs to those who need it, maintain the equipment and safety procedures, and generally expand access to the fitness center for the students and staff of SFCC.

The Panther Fitness Center will be open Monday through Thursday, 6:30-7:30 a.m. and 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m., and Friday, 10 a.m.-noon. These new hours expand the Panther Fitness Center’s access for SFCC students and staff.  The early morning hours were created especially for SFCC staff who would like to train before going to work.

The Panther Fitness Center offers a variety of equipment for staff and students to use in three areas:  a full Nautilus machine circuit room, a cardiovascular and abdominal room with dumbbells, and a free weight power room which includes heavy plate weights.

To use the Panther Fitness Center, all students and staff members must have college identification, fill out an initial emergency treatment form, and sign in and out of the center.  Proper attire is also necessary to use any of the equipment.   Proper attire includes workout shirts, shorts or sweatpants, and athletic-style shoes.  Shower and locker room access is available upon request.

The Panther Fitness Center is conveniently located on the second floor of the Panther Gym, next to the Panther Activity Center.  If you have any questions, give the Panther Fitness Center a call at extension 7030.

So, grab your sneakers and workout clothes and go meet Andy at the gym!
