Dr. Chris McConnell Receives International Award
South Florida Community College biology instructor Dr. Chris McConnell received the Distinguished New Faculty award from the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning during its 2010 conference. Thirty-one colleges and universities throughout the world nominated faculty to receive the award. The award celebrates experienced full-time faculty who have contributed in the most highly creative ways to teaching, learning, and technology.
Dr. McConnell received the award for his innovative ways in teaching anatomy and physiology. He uses his experience as a physician and also as an artist to help students better understand the subject. “I organize my slide presentations in ways that I think are attractive and memorable to people.” He also designed an online course to help new students succeed in his class. “One of the big problems with anatomy and physiology is that it seems many students coming out of high school are ill-prepared for college-level science classes,” Dr. McConnell said. “The online course reviews basic science and terminology and also contains a few chapters on improving study habits and helping students determine what type of the learners they are.”
“I am honored to receive this award,” Dr. McConnell said. “It was a lot of hard work, but it was also a great experience.”

Way to go Dr. McConnell!
Chris, Congratulations! Knowing the technical quality of your beautiful artistic work, serious involvement and devotion to excellence, this award is well deserved… and on top of that, students love your classes!
