SFCC Receives Regional Outstanding Partnership Award
South Florida Community College (SFCC) recently garnered the Regional Outstanding Resource Partnership award in the 10 county district for its partnership with the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at the University South Florida (USF). The award recognizes the resource partner person, organization, or business that has provided outstanding contributions to a regional center or statewide network in advocacy, financial support, partnership building and advising. The SBDC selected SFCC as the recipient because it has been a model for meeting the needs of the local business community.
“After being stationed at SFCC for three years, I felt the college deserved this award because of the strong relationship our organizations have built working together and because of its great support for local businesses,” said Bill McKown, assistant director, Small Business Development Center at USF. “By providing office space, communications infrastructure, and training facilities, SFCC enabled SBDC business analysts to intercept and counsel 166 clients in 2009. Many of the clients represented businesses which were affected by the economic recession and seeking advice on how to meet increasing financial challenges. A summit meeting was held at SFCC for area bankers and lenders to receive information directly from SBA representatives about the details of stimulus funds and, as a result, several Highlands County businesses were able to qualify for and receive special interest-free America’s Recover Capital loans which may have saved many of the businesses.”
“On behalf of all of us at SFCC, I was pleased to join with Dean Kevin Brown and Dr. Leana Revell to accept this recognition for another exemplary partnership,” said Dr. Norm Stephens, SFCC president. “Working together we can accomplish so much more, and we can celebrate that cooperative spirit knowing that our efforts are helping people succeed in business and in their careers. We appreciate the services provided by Bill McKown and David Noel, certified business analyst, and of the leadership provided by Eileen Rodriguez, regional director, SBDC at USF. The people of the Heartland are the real winners from this cooperative effort.”
