“We have a special group of athletes this year,” said Dr. Norm Stephens, president, South Florida Community College. “They are involved in their classes and student activities, the Student Government Association (SGA), some are in the Honors program, and they all participate in community service. They represent the college well.”

Dr. Stephens commended the SFCC Lady Panther Volleyball team, Lady Panther Softball team, and the Panther Baseball team at SFCC’s annual athletics banquet, Wednesday, for their community service work and academic achievements.

“We run our athletic program as a three-prong system,” said Rick Hitt, athletic director. “We focus on competition and performance on the field and court, high standards in the classroom, and being ambassadors and representatives of the college in the community, and we expect great effort in all of these areas from our athletes.”

Typically, the athletic teams participate in eight to 10 community service projects each year. This year’s athletics teams volunteered in 14 community service projects, including the Sertoma Golf Tournament, the Signature Health Care Holiday Gift Drive, Highlands County Special STARS, and local elementary schools’ fundraising festivals.
