Employees Support Inaugural Panther 5K Run/Walk
On April 17, South Florida Community College employees joined students and the public for the inaugural SFCC Panther 5K Run/Walk, sponsored by the SFCC Foundation, Inc. and Bill Jarrett Ford Mercury. A total of 134 participants ran and walked in a race that raised money for Panther Athletics. The route took runners and walkers from the SFCC University Center through the Highlands Campus, to Memorial Drive, and back to the starting point. Coaches Rick Hitt, Carlos Falla, and Kim Crawford and their student athletes were on hand to help make the event a success.
“For a first event, it was wonderfully successful,” said Don Appelquist, executive director, SFCC Foundation. “We had a total of 149 entrants, it was a beautiful morning, and everyone had fun. The panther paw participation medals were a real hit, as were the trophies for the age group winners. We had a great team that helped to coordinate the event and, thanks to the runners and especially to the sponsors, we generated some needed funds for the SFCC Athletic programs.”
“We thank all of the students and staff who participated in the inagural Panther 5K Run/Walk, and congratulations to all of those who placed in their respective division,” said Hitt. Once again, our community was extremely supportive. From our participants to our volunteers, people really worked to help make this an outstanding event. I especially thank our 5K committee memers for their time and support as well as our very generous sponsors. We look forward to next year as planning has already begun on our 2011 race.”
